The quietest beach areas in Bali are on the Bukit Peninsula around Pandawa, in calm Sanur and Jimbaran, and further afield in Amed, Lovina, Pemuteran and the wild west coast. Each swaps the crowds of Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu for space, clear water and a slower pace.
The right one depends on how far you’re willing to travel. South Bali areas are close to the airport and easy for short trips. North, east and west Bali take a few hours to reach but feel truly remote.

Travel times depend heavily on traffic and are a rough guide.
1. Pandawa, Bukit Peninsula
Pandawa, around the village of Kutuh, gives you South Bali’s best beaches without the resort or party crowds. You’re minutes from Pandawa Beach, with its white sand and road carved through limestone cliffs, and from Melasti, Gunung Payung and Timbis. Nusa Dua is about 15 minutes away, and Uluwatu is an easy drive.
Why it’s quiet: it’s a residential village, not a tourist strip. Most visitors come for the day and leave, so mornings and evenings are calm.
Best for: couples, families and long-stay guests who want calm water, privacy and quick access to the rest of South Bali.
2. Jimbaran
Jimbaran’s long, curving bay is famous for seafood dinners on the sand at sunset. The water is generally calm, and away from the dinner rush the beach is relaxed and local, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand. It’s also one of the closest beach areas to the airport.
Best for: short trips, sunset lovers and anyone wanting an easy first or last night.
3. Sanur
Sanur is Bali’s original beach resort, but it has kept a slow, gentle pace. An offshore reef keeps the water calm, and a long beachfront path is perfect for walking and cycling. It’s also the departure point for boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.
Best for: families with young children, older travellers and island-hoppers.
4. Amed
On Bali’s east coast, Amed is a string of small fishing villages with black-sand beaches, colourful Jukung boats and views of Mount Agung. Snorkelling and diving here are excellent, with coral gardens close to the shore and the famous USAT Liberty wreck nearby in Tulamben.
Best for: divers, snorkellers and slow travellers who don’t mind the drive.
5. Lovina
Lovina on the north coast has calm, black-sand beaches and a laid-back, budget-friendly feel. Early-morning boat trips to see wild dolphins are the main activity, and waterfalls and hot springs are nearby.
Best for: budget travellers, families and anyone who wants to see a different side of Bali.
6. Pemuteran
In the far north-west, Pemuteran is a small, quiet village known for coral reef restoration and as the gateway to Menjangan Island, one of Bali’s top diving and snorkelling spots inside West Bali National Park.
Best for: divers, nature lovers and couples wanting true seclusion.
7. Medewi and Balian
On the wild west coast, Medewi and Balian are known for long surf breaks, black sand and rice fields running almost to the sea. The ocean is powerful here, so these are places to surf and unwind rather than swim.
Best for: surfers and travellers who want to disconnect completely.
How to Choose
- Short trip (under a week): stay in South Bali. Pandawa, Jimbaran or Sanur keep you close to the airport so you don’t lose days on the road.
- Want to swim: choose Pandawa, Sanur or Jimbaran for calmer water. The west coast is better for surfing.
- Love snorkelling or diving: head to Amed or Pemuteran.
- Long stay: Pandawa balances quiet days with easy access to supermarkets, cafes and Nusa Dua.
- Two weeks or more: combine a quiet South Bali base with a few nights in the north or east.
Tips for Avoiding the Crowds Anywhere in Bali
- Go to the beach early. Most day-trippers arrive after 10am.
- Visit popular beaches on weekdays, not weekends or Indonesian public holidays.
- Walk to the far end of the beach, away from the main entrance and parking.
- Travel in shoulder season: April to June and September to October.
- Stay close to the beach so you can go when others can’t.
